Historical note
Jacob J. Hildebrand was born in 1880 in the Molotschna Colony in
Russia. He was the oldest son of Jacob and Agatha (Wiebe) Hildebrand. At the
age of 17, he left the colony to embark on a world tour with a friend. He then
returned to Russia, settling in the new Mennonite settlement at Omsk, Siberia,
and worked as a banker and as a proprietor of a lumber and mill company. He
married Katharina Wiens, with whom he had one daughter, Justina. The family
immigrated to Canada in 1924 and settled in Winnipeg. Jacob had an avid
interest in Mennonite history and he published many articles in German
Mennonite periodicals. He also wrote several books. His aversion to communism
fuelled his support of the Nazi party in Germany, but he was also deeply
committed to the Mennonite peace position and advocated for Mennonite rights
in Canada. As an amateur historian, he acquired an extensive collection of
historical material. After his wife's death in 1936, Jacob moved with his
daughter to what is now North Kildonan. He died in
1976.
Scope and content note
This fonds consists primarily of correspondence relating to
personal and political matters, including education, alternative service,
settlement and genealogy. There are also excerpts and transcripts from various
historical writings, materials written by others that Hildebrand accumulated,
and original documents relating to Mennonites in Canada and Hildebrand's
political interests. Finally, the collection includes some maps of various
parts of Canada and Russia, and several photographs.
